 | Can U Help? | Nick Lumb (September 05, 2010) |
These are the first posts I have found about Kefalos from 2010 so thank you to those of you who have posted! My wife and I have been to Kefalos twice before (2004 and 2009 with a holiday on Kalymnos in between) but have not found anything about how the current situation is affecting the Greek islands: Has the 'atmosphere' changed? Are there enough visitors to keep the place going? How are the restaurants doing? How are prices? Our favourite restaurant was Captain John's - is that still going and doing well? How did you get there as we went with Libra who have since gone bust? Our favourite apartments were Archontia - five minutes walk up the hill toward the old village (lovely views of the whole bay, the old village and a through draft at night - lovely!) No-one seems to be handling them now Libra have gone! Any news? Glad to hear that Kefalos Tours are still going. Do they still have heads above water? Many thanks for any information you can provide. Nick

I'd say Jacks is about a 10 minute walk to the main road which has quite a few bars and restaurants and then about another 10 minutes to the top end of the harbour road with more bars and restaurants.
I've never really been bothered by mozzies - a few bites over the years - we always use a plug-in in our room and use a spray before we go out for the evening.
Trips to zia can usually be booked through your rep (probably more expensive) or through Kefalos Tours (along the main road) or Aslepkion Tours (on the harbour road). There are two types of trip one with a Greek night and another which just drops and picks you up from the village. We normally do the latter - it cost 18 euros each at Aslepkions this year - picked up from near Jacks at 5pm - reached the village at 6 and picked up again at 9. Gives you time to wander around, have a drink and then a meal - we use Oromedon restaurant which has fabulous views from the various terraces. Bit of advice, it can get busy in there and we usually reserve a table at the front of the terrace when we arrive and go back to eat at about 7.30.
Enjoy your trip! |

Cigarettes were about 3 euros for 20 but a lot of the smaller shops like Babis and anthoula's (spelling) next to the mayflower had no stock of B+H and other popular brands when we were out there a couple of months ago. Exchange rate for sterling travellers cheques was about 1.16 euros at Kef Tours but that will obviously vary on when you go and the current exchange rate |

Hi Susan and hi Rob!
Thanks so much for the information. I've been without a computer for a while so apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
We're off to Kefalos in 3 weeks - can't wait! We're planning to hire a car and do a bit of exploring so thanks for the information about that.

Just A Friend (June 25, 2010) |
We have been going to Kefalos for many years now and Kontessa is a very fine place to stay. It is in a very good location for all the resorts bars and restaurants. Highly recommend Sebastians for good food, And for car or bike hire go to Manolis car hire and see Katie she is English and very helpful they do very good deals. Acropol bar next door to Sebastians is a very friendly bar and George and his family will make you very welcome there. Hope this helps your stay ENJOY |

Wendy - there are a couple of places along the main road where you can hire scooters and quads. Trust Rentals is one which you can find on the web.
Enjoy your holiday |

I can't remember seeing a lauderette in the resort of area of kefalos although there may be one up in the old village. We usually buy beach towels when we get out (5-8 euros).
There is a boat trip twice a week from Kef harbour to Nissyros - it can be booked through Asklepion Tours on the harbour road or Kefalos Tours in the resort centre. The price earlier this year was 18 euros (without the bus upto the volcano which I think was 7 euros). Mandraki where you land is worth looking around. There are other trips (fishing/bbq) available from the harbour which you can probably book at the same place.
There are also regular ferries from Mastihari across to Kalymnos running throughout the day |
