Hi there,

We were last in Kefalos in 2008, we came for a week and loved it that much returned for 2 weeks later in the year. We stayed in Maritsa Studios, and found everything fine. We are finally returning to Kefalos in August, but we are booked into Jacks 2 apartments. The reviews for these apartments however are rather worrying, does anyone have first hand experience, and are people just expecting far too much, or is there truth in the reviews? I dont really want to spend the next few months worrying about it, when i want to be looking forward to it? After waiting 4 years for a holiday i dont want it to end in tears.

Hi, can anyone tell me how to book the Albatros Apartments down by the Harbour - have only managed to find one website which said they were sold out but don't think that can be right - when we were there last year the owner was worried about how he was going to stay open as FC had pulled out - any suggestions appreciated!

click to enlarge I have returned from my beloved Kefalos, the Blue Lagoon Village is up & running & killing the local trade .Where the Thomsons & First coice pulled the Plug ,they gave the room allocation to the Blue Lagoon & Mitzis  at Kardemena. There are 150 workers from The Blue Laoon Village inthe accomodation of first choice & Thomsons  they dont spend their money in Kefalos it goes to Albania,Lithuania,Bulgaria.Popys swimming pool is drained so said workers cant use it,neither can we.Andreas & Ritas wedding went well. For the first time in ten years I was able to get to the top of the Mountain overlooking Kefalos Harbour.Taken there By the  owner of Dimitris Cars.Anyone who wants independent guiding, should seek adice from Dimitris,or Maria in the Acropol Bar.They made my holiday for me practical local  knowledge. Also the trip to Nissyross Volcano ,pay the capatain of Kamari 2 15 euros  at 12.30  on a Tuesday better value than your reps  18 euros can give you a pick up from Asklipsi tours on the sea front. We travellers owe it to the locals to support them & not use the all inclusive which is ruining the island

The Pantheon is listed on Low Cost holidays website, at a very reasonable price I might add

I've stayed there several times myself and love it!

Rob D

Pantheon Studios - just received the Direct Holidays brochure for 2012 in the post this morning and they are also in there

Rob D

Hi Kate and Neil

If you ask the question on http://www.kefalos.me.uk forum some of the regulars stay there often and will probably have direct contact details

Hope you get sorted out

Rob D

Travelrepublic and Easyjet Holidays both have the Pantheon listed on their websites

Kate A

We visited Kefalos last year and stayed at Pantheon studios however we are trying to book again for this year and can't seem to find a site that will let me book. Does anyone know how I can book with Pantheon as I heard they are only taking direct bookings now?

Rob D

Hi - It looks like FC have definately pulled out at Kefalos - nothing on their website at all.

I have lifted the following contact details from another site for the Kontessa - apparently these details were correct in May 2010 - you may be able to book direct - if they have lost FC then I'm sure they'll be looking at independent travellers. Let us know how you get on

address  Kontessa Apartments, 85301 Kefalos, Kos, Dodecanese, Greece

Went to travel agent who told us Kontessa no longer with First Choice !!! But you can still go on your holiday ?
Looked on internet can't book it anywhere !!!
Can anyone shed any light on whats happened !! Many Thanks

Does anyone know if its actually built yet cant find anything about current progress and having slight panic attacks!!
many thanks!

Rob D

There is a reasonably good bus service from Kef to Kos Town but I obviously don't know about how it will be from Blue Lagoon. There is a good link to the bus timetable for this year on this site - http://www.mastihari-uncovered.com/bustimes.htm. It was 4e from Kef to Kos this year. I think there's an idea of taxi prices as well on the site. Kos Town is definately worth a trip for half a day.

We usually book the trip to Nissyros from one of the two agents in Kefalos. Boat plus bus upto the (active) volcano was about 25e this year. The boat leaves Kefalos at 9am and leaves Nissyros at 3 - 3.30 so you do have time to do the volcano and spend sometime down in the main town.
You may be able to get some more information from these two sites:

Most of the members on these sites have been going out to kefalos a lot longer than me.

Alison J

Hi Rob

Thanks for your information, would you arrange a taxi then up to Kos Town? Any idea on costs? What is the bus service like on this island? The boat trip sounds good too...

Kind regards
Alison

Rob D

Hi Alison

Kefalos is about a 10-15 minute drive away from the Blue Lagoon - Thomson have been a bit cheeky with saying it's in Kefalos. Kardamena is about the same distance the other way up the coast. Kos Town is probably 30-40 minutes away. The Blue Lagoon is quite close to the airport.
If it's your first trip to Kos I'd recommend an evening in Zia for the view of the sunset, a boat trip to Nissyros which leaves from Kefalos and a day in Kos Town

Alison J

Just booked for the Blue Lagoon village (new hotel) , In august 2011, looks fantastic and is expected to be finished in May 2011. Just curious about Kefalos as never been to Kos before. How far is kardemena or Kos town and are they worth a trip ? Any recommended excursions otherwise ? Thanks Kos experts xxx

Jason B

Hi, I've visited Kos for many years, but always stayed at in the Northern resorts of Tingaki, Kos Town and Mastihari.  Is Kefalos more sheltered from the sudden strong winds that can blow for a few days at a time?

I'd also be looking for places that serve really traditional greek food. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Nige W          10/10

45 euros

Glad you enjoy Kef, we've had two trips out this year and comparing prices for next year already

Sue T

Rob, thanks for your info. Found an email for a taxi firm in Mastihari but unfortunately she wanted 45 euros just one way. Think we,l take pot luck and just try and get one at the airport. Really looking forward to going back the end of this month. I think we,v discovered a little piece of heaven in kefalos. Im already looking for our 2 week hol next year.

Rob D

Sue - there always seem to be plenty of taxis at the airport - there are no taxi companies in Kefalos. I think I've read on one forum that the fare is about 25 euros. There is some information on the mastihari uncovered website where there may be a link to book one

Sue T

hi, we stayed in kefalos this july 2010 and we,r going back the end of september. dos anyone know how easy it is to get a taxi from the airport and how much it would be? or if there are any local taxi firms in kefalos we could prebook taxis with? would appreciate any help on this. sue.

Kevin D

hi nick kefalos still as good and as cheap as ever suggest you join kefalos chat this is an excellent forum run by kefalos regulars willing and able to answer any queries re kefalos

Nick L

These are the first posts I have found about Kefalos from 2010 so thank you to those of you who have posted!
My wife and I have been to Kefalos twice before (2004 and 2009 with a holiday on Kalymnos in between) but have not found anything about how the current situation is affecting the Greek islands:
Has the 'atmosphere' changed?
Are there enough visitors to keep the place going?
How are the restaurants doing?
How are prices?
Our favourite restaurant was Captain John's - is that still going and doing well?
How did you get there as we went with Libra who have since gone bust?
Our favourite apartments were Archontia - five minutes walk up the hill toward the old village   (lovely views of the whole bay, the old village and a through draft at night - lovely!)  No-one   seems to be handling them now Libra have gone!  Any news?
Glad to hear that Kefalos Tours are still going.  Do they still have heads above water?
Many thanks for any information you can provide.
Nick

had a fab holiday once again, stayed at the albatross apartments, lovely people. look forward to going back again year after year, so little has changed since our last visit that it feels like we never left .

Rob D

I'd say Jacks is about a 10 minute walk to the main road which has quite a few bars and restaurants and then about another 10 minutes to the top end of the harbour road with more bars and restaurants.

I've never really been bothered by mozzies - a few bites over the years - we always use a plug-in in our room and use a spray before we go out for the evening.

Trips to zia can usually be booked through your rep (probably more expensive) or through Kefalos Tours (along the main road) or Aslepkion Tours (on the harbour road). There are two types of trip one with a Greek night and another which just drops and picks you up from the village. We normally do the latter - it cost 18 euros each at Aslepkions this year - picked up from near Jacks at 5pm - reached the village at 6 and picked up again at 9. Gives you time to wander around, have a drink and then a meal - we use Oromedon restaurant which has fabulous views from the various terraces. Bit of advice, it can get busy in there and we usually reserve a table at the front of the terrace when we arrive and go back to eat at about 7.30.

Enjoy your trip!

Nikki C

We are coming to Jacks apartments on 30th July, are the far from the shops and bars?

Also, how bad are the mossies? And how do I book a trip to Zia

   Thanks

Paula W

well we were due to return to our beloved kefalos in just over a week unfortunately we booked with gold trail

hope to be able to sort out an alternative quickly and in time for our work holidays
hope it hasn't affected too many of the people in kefalos x

Rob D

Cigarettes were about 3 euros for 20 but a lot of the smaller shops like Babis and anthoula's (spelling) next to the mayflower had no stock of B+H and other popular brands when we were out there a couple of months ago. Exchange rate for sterling travellers cheques was about 1.16 euros at Kef Tours but that will obviously vary on when you go and the current exchange rate

Anne B

how much are cigarettes working out in kefalos or greece this year and what was the exchange rate

Jason D          10/10

we hired a moped from 11 june to 16 june 2010 yianni and his staff were very polite and helpful, we had no problems with the moped. we were picked up from our hotel and taken to pick up the moped and given a lift back on return. will definetaly hire from them again when we go back in a couple of years.

Jane T

Hi Susan and hi Rob!

Thanks so much for the information.  I've been without a computer for a while so apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
We're off to Kefalos in 3 weeks - can't wait! We're planning to hire a car and do a bit of exploring so thanks for the information about that.

Just A          10/10

We have been going to Kefalos for many years now and Kontessa is a very fine place to stay.  It is in a very good location for all the resorts bars and restaurants.  Highly recommend Sebastians for good food, And for car or bike hire go to Manolis car hire and see Katie she is English and very helpful they do very good deals. Acropol bar next door to Sebastians is a very friendly bar and George and his family will make you very welcome there. Hope this helps your stay ENJOY

Wendy P          10/10

Thank you for your replies, roll on next year Yahooooo

Ash S          10/10

Wendy, We have stayed at Kontessas now for the last 4 visits to Kefalos and cant praise it enough, clean friendly great pool, everything you need close by.

Rob D

Wendy - there are a couple of places along the main road where you can hire scooters and quads. Trust Rentals is one which you can find on the web.

Enjoy your holiday

Wendy P

Rob D

I can't remember seeing a lauderette in the resort of area of kefalos although there may be one up in the old village. We usually buy beach towels when we get out (5-8 euros).

There is a boat trip twice a week from Kef harbour to Nissyros - it can be booked through Asklepion Tours on the harbour road or Kefalos Tours in the resort centre. The price earlier this year was 18 euros (without the bus upto the volcano which I think was 7 euros). Mandraki where you land is worth looking around. There are other trips (fishing/bbq) available from the harbour which you can probably book at the same place.

There are also regular ferries from Mastihari across to Kalymnos running throughout the day

Vicki W

My boyfriend and I are coming to Kefalos for 2 weeks at the beginning of July and I was wondering if there is a launderette in Kefalos?  We only have 15kg weight allowance so I'll need to wash towels halfway through!!  Any help on this appreciated.

Also, for the boat trips do they go from any ports other than Kos?  Maybe one closer to Kefalos?

Thanks!

Rita K

Barbara C

Can anyone tell me where exactly the Marista Studios are.  I am convincing myself that they're at the far end of Kefalos where its a lot quieter and a long walk into Kefalos bars and restaurants but my husband seems to think they might be further down, going towards the harbour, past the Sydney.

Nigel W          10/10

When we stay in our beloved Kefalos , we stay at Eftichia apartments .Only 6 & they are but a short walk from the Harbour & Supermarkets, boo boo the dog has now learned English. They are a great family,we eat at the Golden Fleece,we shop at Nicks or George as we call him on the corner by the harbour. For Cars we use DIMITRIS CARS HAVE KNOWN THE family for years & the Sunlighyt Cafe & the Acropol Bar are other favourite haunts. We were last there the beginning of May & we will be returning with Olympic again in October. We love Kefalos & its people language is not a problem for seasoned travellers Yamas & heres to October!

Kevin D

ZEUS IS JUST AS YOU COME INTO KEFALOS IT IS A NICE HOTEL IN A QUIET AREA YOU MIGHT HEAR THE ODD COCKEREL AND YOU HAVE JIMS SUPERMARKET ACROSS THE ROAD

Caz V

Could somebody tell me where the Zeus Hotel is situated? and how far this is in relation to Kos Town.

(I was under the impression that this hotel was in Kefalos its self but on looking at google earth map it looks very near to the centre of Kos Town.)

And if you have stayed here in the middle of June before is it  very quiet??

Hope somebody can help.

Thank You
