Kefalos - (Resorts on Kos)

Rob D

Hi Jane

Billys is quite well situated off a small road running parallel to the main road. If you follow the road around one way you come out by the church at the bottom of the big hill up to old kefalos - not too much of a climb back and the other way leads down past a large supermarket (5 minutes) to the main road opposite the crossroads leading to the harbour road - flattish. There are other places with pools that you can use within 5 minutes - Yiannis and the Mayflower. We've used Billys pool and had lunch there a few times. Our friends have stayed there a few times and going back there this year. It's a good choice!

I can't remember seeing a lauderette in the resort of area of kefalos although there may be one up in the old village. We usually buy beach towels when we get out (5-8 euros).

There is a boat trip twice a week from Kef harbour to Nissyros - it can be booked through Asklepion Tours on the harbour road or Kefalos Tours in the resort centre. The price earlier this year was 18 euros (without the bus upto the volcano which I think was 7 euros). Mandraki where you land is worth looking around. There are other trips (fishing/bbq) available from the harbour which you can probably book at the same place.

There are also regular ferries from Mastihari across to Kalymnos running throughout the day

Wendy - there are a couple of places along the main road where you can hire scooters and quads. Trust Rentals is one which you can find on the web.

Enjoy your holiday

Cigarettes were about 3 euros for 20 but a lot of the smaller shops like Babis and anthoula's (spelling) next to the mayflower had no stock of B+H and other popular brands when we were out there a couple of months ago. Exchange rate for sterling travellers cheques was about 1.16 euros at Kef Tours but that will obviously vary on when you go and the current exchange rate

I'd say Jacks is about a 10 minute walk to the main road which has quite a few bars and restaurants and then about another 10 minutes to the top end of the harbour road with more bars and restaurants.

I've never really been bothered by mozzies - a few bites over the years - we always use a plug-in in our room and use a spray before we go out for the evening.

Trips to zia can usually be booked through your rep (probably more expensive) or through Kefalos Tours (along the main road) or Aslepkion Tours (on the harbour road). There are two types of trip one with a Greek night and another which just drops and picks you up from the village. We normally do the latter - it cost 18 euros each at Aslepkions this year - picked up from near Jacks at 5pm - reached the village at 6 and picked up again at 9. Gives you time to wander around, have a drink and then a meal - we use Oromedon restaurant which has fabulous views from the various terraces. Bit of advice, it can get busy in there and we usually reserve a table at the front of the terrace when we arrive and go back to eat at about 7.30.

Enjoy your trip!

Artemis - (Accommodation in Kefalos)

Rob D          9/10

Just come back from another week in Kef and stayed for the first time at the Artemis. Would not hesitate to use these apartments again - great location, set back from the main road (so some traffic noise). Katerina and family very firendly and helpful.

Sue - there always seem to be plenty of taxis at the airport - there are no taxi companies in Kefalos. I think I've read on one forum that the fare is about 25 euros. There is some information on the mastihari uncovered website where there may be a link to book one

45 euros

Glad you enjoy Kef, we've had two trips out this year and comparing prices for next year already

Hi Alison

Kefalos is about a 10-15 minute drive away from the Blue Lagoon - Thomson have been a bit cheeky with saying it's in Kefalos. Kardamena is about the same distance the other way up the coast. Kos Town is probably 30-40 minutes away. The Blue Lagoon is quite close to the airport.
If it's your first trip to Kos I'd recommend an evening in Zia for the view of the sunset, a boat trip to Nissyros which leaves from Kefalos and a day in Kos Town

There is a reasonably good bus service from Kef to Kos Town but I obviously don't know about how it will be from Blue Lagoon. There is a good link to the bus timetable for this year on this site - http://www.mastihari-uncovered.com/bustimes.htm. It was 4e from Kef to Kos this year. I think there's an idea of taxi prices as well on the site. Kos Town is definately worth a trip for half a day.

We usually book the trip to Nissyros from one of the two agents in Kefalos. Boat plus bus upto the (active) volcano was about 25e this year. The boat leaves Kefalos at 9am and leaves Nissyros at 3 - 3.30 so you do have time to do the volcano and spend sometime down in the main town.
You may be able to get some more information from these two sites:

Most of the members on these sites have been going out to kefalos a lot longer than me.

Antoni's is still going - we used the place last year when we had a late flight back and couldn't keep our room on at the Artemis.

I think Peter has been independent for a few years but I'm informed he may be with TC this year

Hi - It looks like FC have definately pulled out at Kefalos - nothing on their website at all.

I have lifted the following contact details from another site for the Kontessa - apparently these details were correct in May 2010 - you may be able to book direct - if they have lost FC then I'm sure they'll be looking at independent travellers. Let us know how you get on

Hope you get sorted out

Back from our second stay at Mayflower 2, although we have used the pool area etc on other holidays and can only echo previous comments.

Demetris and his family cannot do enough for you and this year he has expanded his lunchtime and evening menu to include some great meals.

He is also this year doing a pasta night on Thursdays for 6 euros per person, kids eat free and a buffet evening on Sundays 12 euros pp with free wine. All lovely food.

Already looking forward to our visit next year.

Marias Cocktail Bar - (Bars in Kefalos)

Rob D          10/10

Had a brilliant time in August and used Marias almost every night. The 'boys' were both in good form - and Mano enjoyed taking my son at football on the PS2. Large vap still 1.5 euros

Finally a big thank you to Maria and her husband for the help they gave my wife when she had a fall outside the bar one evening (and no she hadn't been drinking). It transpired they moaned to the council and the potholes along the harbour road were filled in a few days later.
