Natale C

Just returned from a last minute two week break at the Martisa Studios and currently working our way through My Travel complaints procedure! When we first arrived at the studios, our initial reaction was we wanted moved. Our feet stuck to the floor and generally the room did not feel as clean as it should be. However, after a trip to the supermarket and a few cleaning supplies later we decided to stay where we were as the room is really only a base.

The first week was great, Kefalos is lovely and the people are really friendly. We hired a quad, tried out different places to eat, spent time at the pool and generally chilled out! One week into the holiday there was a power cut which lasted most of the day. As we had no cooking facilities, we headed out to explore the place a bit. When we came back later on in the afternoon, we discovered the power had returned, however our hob had been turned on and a pot left sitting on top had started to tarnish. My boyfriend went downstairs to let Maritsa know what had happened and Maritsa came upstairs and flew into a rage. Now, it was not a big deal, an accident which we felt best to let Maritsa know happened. I now honestly wish we had just washed the pot and forgot about it. We were subjected to a torrent of verbal abuse from Maritsa in Greek-as she forgot how to speak English. She demanded we pay 20 euros for the pot (which we were willing to do), 70 euros for the apparently broken hob and 150 euros for the fridge (still can't get my head around that one?). We called the reps who were great, came up showed Maritsa that everything was working and there was no reason to ask us to pay any money as nothing was broken and it had just been an accident. But Maritsa was adamant nothing was working and called an 'electrician', who took the hob away for 20 minutes and when Maritsa brought it back to us we were told it was broken. Naturally-we weren't going to check it and get electrocuted, as far as I was concerned this person could have done anything to it! Maritsa continued to demand money for the hob, which our reps told us not to pay as it had been working when they had checked it prior to it being taken away. They came out a few days later, neither my boyfriend or myself were present, but they went into our apartment, switched on the hob which was- and still is- working. They asked Maritsa to go in the room with them to see the hob working and she at first refused. We were offered other accommodation in another resort to move into that day, but we were so close to the end of our holiday and were friends with neighboring holiday makers we decided against it. However Maritsa's attitude changed and once again she was smiley and happy until on the last day she tried to start an argument with my boyfriend in front of another family and then with the two of us as we left for breakfast.

I did not feel safe/comfortable in the apartments. On 'cleaning' days she would just let herself in the room without knocking and start demanding money. I was worried about our belongings so we eventually lived out of the suitcase which we locked every time we left. Her mother, a lovely little woman, would not even look at us or acknowledge us if we said hello. We honestly felt like criminals, but to move would take at least half a day of our holiday, add further stress not to mention a cut of our spending money. Even at night if I was fussing over the cats on the driveway - she would stand at her front door and stare at me, deliberately making me uncomfortable. Now there were issues with the behaviour of other holiday makers when we were there-far worse than a rescued pot, however we were the ones victimised.

I will never return to or recommend the Maritsa Studios to anyone. I can appreciate that people have had good experiences there from the previous postings, but I wouldn't want any other individual to be at the receiving end of the abuse we received from Maritsa. Had we been younger, less stubborn (!) that woman would have ruined our holiday and emptied our purses.

On a much lighter note - the cats are little darlings and I think I've seen a description of Minnie (black and white, extremely friendly, with a black patch on her front left leg) the proud mum of 3 kittens, Donald and Daisy -black and white twins - and Pluto, an adorable mainly white kitten with black patches over her eyes which give her this little innocent look!  We also have Mickey, a big black and white Tom with bad congestion. I'd love to take both him and Nala to a vet, we know these are minor problems that could be fixed with some TLC. Nala is a tortoise shell and white cat with a sore eye and Mufasa, same colourings but female competition to Minnie! . Simba, a dark brown stripy small cat who loves being cuddled once he's become used to you, although you have to be careful if Minnie's around as she'll chase him away. Can you see a Disney theme here! They all adore milk and chicken! I wish I could have brought them all home - but I'm sure they will find another poor family staying at the Maritsa who will fall in love with them and take care of them during their stay.

Well peeps - I didn't mean to make this as long at it is! But if it helps people to make a better informed decision then my bleary eyes and now cold tea was worthwhile. Kefalos is great, not too quiet but not that busy either. Maritsa Studios are OK as a base, if you're like me buy some cleaning stuff when you are stocking up on your water. But if anything does happen to your room, please make sure you call the reps straight away before you see Maritsa just to keep yourself covered. On the day we checked out another family checked into our room, surely Maritsa would not check them into a room with a broken hob in self catering apartments?! Here endeth my grumble and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Lucy P

answering my own question; yes, they do have safety deposit boxes - 20 euro for 2 weeks, 30 euro for 2 weeks for a fan.

extremely well maintained studios, cleaned and linen changed every other day, plus washing up was usually done too!

the cats are fine, 2 new black and white kittens, bit wary of people, but by the time i left they were following me around as i bought cat biscuits for them all every night!

would reccomend these apartments, but they are a bit of a way from the main area of kefalos, the road can be a little noisy, but pretty good overall.

Hi nick

Yes Hearts won 4-0 worth the trip so says my husband. I am awfully glad you mentioned Bachlava as I could never remember the name I kept on calling it Balaclava. I agree with you about Kardamena they were all very young there. Not that I am old ( in my opinion).I will give the chinese a go when I return in May or August.
I have a few weekends booked also. Blackpool September weekend with the family and father in law, Amsterdam in October (three couples) and Blackpool again at the end of October with another 11 girls. we go every year for a girlie weekend, we call ourselves the Scottish Slappers but we are all nice of course?
I hope you have a good weekend away it sounds very good.

Hi Nick

No I haven't been to Skiathos, I have been to Sidari in Corfu. I didn't like it very much I thought it was quite dirty. We had to walk up a dirt track with torches to reach our apartment everynight.
We went to Captain John's a couple of times too and enjoyed a  lovely cheap meal. We didn't go to the Chinese as we heard a lot of bad reports on it was it nice? We tried to book Martisa for May next year, the travel agent couldn't find it anywhere. She states it may have been withdrawn. We did manage to book three three bedroom apartment at the manolis.Six of us are going this time there will only be two persons in each room. We got the extra bed for a £1.00 supplement. We could always use the extra bed to store our clothes with there being no drawers.
We didn't go on the horse and cart as my daughter felt so sorry for the horse having to go up and down that same road in the blistering heat.
We went into Kardamena for the day as my husband supports our local team, Hearts, No bars were showing the match in Kefalos as Chelsea was playing at the same time. The bar has to have access to Santanta to be able to show Scottish football abroad. Are you booking Skiathos for next years annual holiday?

Nick C

Carol

Couldn't agree more with you about Spain, not just Kos but Greece in general is much nicer. We only walked down to the harbour once and that was enough i got a blister on my toe! , like your selves we stayed near the Maritsa end but we did go down to the Chinese restaurant and Captain John's a few times

The rep Amanda was very good, if you had any queries or needed some help she always sorted it out, we travelled with Manos out of Manchester, it's the first time we have gone with them and didn't have any problems

It's good to hear the cats are ok, the black and white one used to come in to our room, it is hard not to give them any food but i like cats any way so it was nice. Did you have a go on the horse and cart ride, we were going to but only saw it with people in it, it would have made that long walk back a lot easier

We will definitely go back to Kefalos again but next year my girlfriend is wanting to go to Skiathos, have you been there before, we haven't so it will be a new experiance

Yes the cats are still there we made the mistake of giving them milk and ended up with three of them in our apatrment No 8. Kefalos was very quiet still, some of the restaurants had no-one in them. We like it quiet too. We walked to the harbour a few times where we met our rep Amanda at Sydneys bar watched a live band and Tubby Brown, he was crap, the band was good.We visited a few of the other bars at the harbour but preferred going to the ones nearer Martisa aparts. The walk back was a bit of a struggle after half  a caraft of wine and a few Amstels. We flew from Glasgow with My Travel they were also excellent. I haven't stopped raving about my holiday since I got back. We will try to return next August as we loved it so much. I will never go back to mainland Spain after visiting Kos. I give the whole holiday 10/10.

So glad you had a good holiday like you say the apartments are basic but you have everything you need and Maritsa is always around to help with any queries

The people and all the different places to eat couldn't be better, we didn't go on the Greek night but that is something we can do next time. Sounds like the green bags are a good idea!

Bambi next door is always very good for that late night drink and not having to walk too far back is a bonus. Did you see any of the cats, they looked clean and didn't cause any problems as most of the time they were a sleep

The weather sounds like it was hot but with that breeze it never feels too hot, we had a great time and will be going back as it's so easy to relax and forget about work!

Did you find the resort to be quiet or busy, when we were there in June it was fairly quiet which was nice for us as you never want places to be too packed with people, we will recommend Kefalos to our friends as it was one of the best holidays we have had.

we stayed at martisa studios for 2 weeks. we had a brilliant time, it was a five minute walk to the beach [which was normailly quite quiet]. the closest pool is a minute walk away, where you will find a family run bar where they serve snacks [very tasty]. the walk down to where all the taverna's and bars is about 10 minutes and about 20 minutes to the harbour. for a light snack or informal meal try riverside snack bar [next to the first cash point you will find] which is run by chris. the studios are basic, you get a few pots and pans, kettle and a two ring hob. the beds are comfortable, would recommenrd hiring a fan as it gets quite hot a night [we paid 30 euro for 2 weeks]. would also recommend getting a mosquito replent, you can get these spiral looking things if you burn them at night that kept them away! also try sebastians next to the harbour the muscles are so yummy!!we hired a car to expolre kos town it was very busy but good for presents etc. if you get a chance try and go to greek night in zia, you will be able to watch the sunset which is amazing then you will be stuffed to the brim with greek food and wine. paradise beach is another good place to go to we went jet skiing and pa**ending which was so much fun!  we would definatley go back, everybody was so friendly and kind!

Hi Nick

Just back from Kefalos, where do I begin! We had a great time, met loads of lovely people, Food was excellent and very cheap, Weather was scorching 40 degrees most of the time. Maritsa Studios where basic but in an excellent location and Martisa was very helpfull. Bambi at the Manola apartments was also very nice, we had a good few nights sitting with him and his family at the bar, having one or two or three for the road. Greek night was excellent value for the money, I don't know if you went on it but on the way home on the bus they give you a green bag, just incase! guess who had to use it? A few to many of the free flowing wine and Greek dancing .
I would certainly encourage anyone to go to Kos as we had the perfect holiday, we will  be returning next year for sure.

Not sure why it's gone done to 3/10, it is basic but very clean, the lady who runs the place is called Maritsa and she is on the ball all the time so i'm sure you will like it

Have a great time i'm sure you will, look forward to hearing how you went on

Manolis are right next door, you will have your rep meeting there. The pool is very nice, it is not the biggest in the world but you don't have far to go to the pool bar!

If you walk down the road and turn right just after the super market and go up the side road, the Chrysoula apartments have got a public pool that we used quite a bit, the pool is very big they don't mind any one using it as long as you buy a drink or something to eat. There are plenty of sun beds and it is very relaxing, they do a very nice chip buttie as well!

You will like Kefalos the peolpe are lovely and the resort is very laid back. Looking at the temps it is getting warm but there is always a slight breeze which doesn't make it feel too warm

Have a great time

Thanks for replying. The holday info says Martsa apts., but I think you may be right it's the Martisa hence the reason I can't find out anything about them. We changed our hol from Halkidiki to Kos Thomsons didn't have a picture in the brochure as they stated they were new apts? It seems they just didn't include them in their brochure I am now wondering why. You seem to have enjoyed them and had a good time in Kefalos, I hope I do the same.

We have just stayed for two weeks at the Maritsa Studios and had a wonderful time, the studios are in a great place away from any noisy late night bars and clubs

For those who know about the black and white cat, she is doing fine judging by the "buttons" on her tummy it looks like she has recently had kittens. Two children at the apartments called her Felix for her similarity to the cat on the adverts

The apartments are basic but very clean, they are near to the main road but don't let this put you off as you hardly hear any traffic, there are two supermarkets near by with two telephones outside, the beach is just a few hundred yards down by a side road next to Jim's supermarket

Just along the main road from the apartments are several good restaurants we couldn't fault any of them but found the best one to be Four Seasons, they do a very nice steak!

The prices of all of the bars and restaurants are very good, we took the same amount of spending money as last year (Santorini) and came back with a few hundred pounds left over

The sun shone every day and the breeze that you experience is very nice as it stops you from feeling too hot, we will be going back as it is a great place to chill out and relax

Stayed in Maritsa studios for 2 weeks! We had 2 rooms because the rooms were too small to fit a child and 2 adults. So we paid for the extra room. The rooms were very very basic with none of the kettles, toilets or reading lights next to the beds working in either room. The furniture consists of cheap plastic chairs.
The studios are situated in a field next to a busy noisy! road to Kos town which is 30 miles away, so cars, coaches and trucks are always zooming fast by. The studios are not in Kefalos, strictly speaking, they are in Agios Stefanos which consists of 5 buildings and the Club Med Hotel. Kefalos is 30 minute walk away down that busy road with no pavement on either side.
There is a very poor selection of shops and restaurants which are all up to rip you off since you are isolated and cant go anywhere else. We hired a car the last week and discovered anywhere was better than where we were (especially Kos town, Tzia, etc).
To top things off and met up with some friends from Kos town. Their little boy came for a sleep over one night since we had the free bed in the second room and our boy was lonely. We were woken up by the landlady asking for 40 euro because the other little boy slept over! The Tour Rep was of no use commenting that a hotel back home would have been more expensive!!! (this is a room we had paid for and! had paid under occupancy fee).
The sea although very clean is alot colder in Kefalos compared to the rest of the island due to a specific tide in the bay. So not ideal for children really.
On the last day you empty the room at 10am and the bus picks you up at midnight. Again its 40 euro if you want the room until 9pm.
What can I say? I love Greece and have had fantastic holidays there but this time we really made a mistake. Hopefully people will read this and they can try to raise the standards of this place.
I have photos of the rooms and studios as proof for people to judge for themselves...
Thank you,
Kyri

Just got back from kos, booked at last minute {9 hours before flight!} so didn`t really know what to expect. Room was clean, though being on the ground floor was a disadvantage as the front isn`t that private. As previous guests we befriended black and white kitten who would eat anything! Updates on her progress would be gratefully received as there was nearly tears on leaving her to come home (from my girlfriend not me, honest!).Very bad flying times, picked up at 0245 which meant paying 40 Euros to keep the room on until then.

'MARITSA STUDIOS'
just got back from a superb week at 'Maritsa', only booked it 4 days before and did'nt know what to expect, but it was excellent, very clean, although the noise from the road could be a little bit of a pain don't let that put you off.
Bit of a hike to the centre of kefalos ad I would suggest car hire if with little children.
My daughter befriended the little black 'n white wild kitten, and fed it sardines so if you are in studio 11 expect a visit.
Go to the sandy beach which is a 10 minute walk - go up the road to the entrance to club med and walk down the lane which runs alongside and this brings you to a lovely sandy beach - snorkeling round the point is good if you have younsters, and the ruins of the basilica are worth looking over.
Our biggest dissapointment though was the water temperature - much cooler then the med, something to do with the changing of the water in that particular bay, so get a bus to Pleasure beach, only 10 minutes away and the waters a little warmer.
Will certainly go back again.

Ashley B

Maritsa is clean & well maintained family run business,
Excellent view across the bay, Although a fair walk to all the night life, This has to be one of the most peacefull parts of Kefalos, The reps are great and can give you great deals on car hire & Excursions as well as knowing all there is to know about the resort.
I stayed 2 weeks ago & im allready planning to go back next year.
To all that are going make sure you vistit the pool Bar where you can get great food/Drinks and a friendly welcome form Bambice & the team.

"Maritsa Studios". Really friendly family-run apartments. Bit of a hike into town but 5 minutes away from a beautiful, deserted beach.
Would definitely return but fully booked this year. Kefalos is wonderful!
